Florence’s Nemesis – Pisa: miracle square and the leaning tower

Between the conclusion of the Conference on Friday evening and the starting of the Post-Conference trip to Austrofoma on Sunday morning, there is one free day when we can all take the opportunity to rest, work or go sightseeing, depending on need and preferences.

The FORMEC Committee has then decided to seize such opportunity to create an additional moment of aggregation, where we can enjoy the beauty of Tuscany and the company of our colleagues at the same time.

Obviously, most of you have already made their plan, but if you have not, please let us tempt you with an alternative.

Originally, the idea was that of guided tour of Florence, but we then realized that it is a relatively simple thing to plan on one’s own, and also that most of you will have already taken the opportunity to visit Florence during the evenings, the breaks or those sessions that they deemed incapable to face the competition with Duomo, piazza Signoria or Ponte Vecchio.

Hence the current new proposal: an easy day trip outside Florence and to her nemesis – Pisa!

That is where one finds Piazza dei Miracoli and its famous leaning tower. Pisa is just one 1-h train ride away and a proper visit will take 4 or 5 hours (2 hours on the train – to go and come back – and two hours to visit the main highlights. Then add one hour if you plan to eat something, which I would).

So the new proposal is:

09:00 Meet at Santa Maria Novella Central Station - Buy train tickets to Pisa Centrale (9€30 apiece)

09:28 Board Convoy RV Tuscany Line 4019

10:28 Arrival in Pisa Centrale

10:30-12:30 Walk to Piazza dei Miracoli and visit the main sights

12:30-14:00 Lunch

After 14:00 Board any train back to Santa Maria Novella – there is one train every ca. 20 minutes, so you can leave immediately after lunch or stay longer – even have dinner in Pisa. It is a nice place (not according to the Florentine, though) and there are many more things to see than Piazza dei Miracoli alone, of course.

Looking forward to another nice day together!
