June 9, 2025: The ice breaking event will be held at the METLA House (Yliopistokatu 6) at 20:00 – 23:00.
METLA House was completed in 2004 as the office building for the Joensuu unit of the Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla). In 2015, Metla merged with the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), but the building's name remained the same. Currently, the European Forest Institute (EFI) also operates in the building.
When completed in 2004, METLA House was the first large three-story office building in Finland made entirely of wood. The building's structure and interior design incorporate almost all 24 tree species native to Finland. The dominant wood species in the structure is spruce, which makes up about 80% of the total wood material. Wood constitutes about 40% of all materials used in the building, totaling approximately 2,000 cubic meters. METLA House has also received several awards, including the Wood Award 2005 by Puuinfo.
