June 10, 2025: Buses will depart from Joensuu city center in the morning, around 8:00 a.m. Detailed schedules and meeting points will be emailed to participants, so please check your email regularly.
For all the field trip participants:
SAFETY
All participants will get a safety gear (helmet, hi-vis vest, goggles and ear protection) by the organisers. The safety gear will be found on the bus on your seat when you start the field trip. Please, wear safety gear at all industrial sites and at the forest harvesting site. You’re welcome to keep the hi-vis vest as a memory from the field trip. However, please return all other gear to the bus at the end of the trip. Shoes must enable safe walking on mill yards and in the forest. No high heels or slippers. Certified safety shoes are not required.
WEATHER
In general, the weather in June in Finland is full of light and the temperature is warm but not too hot. However, sometimes the weather can be full of surprises, wind and even heavy rain is possible. Please, be sure that you wear an outfit warm enough and be ready for rain with a waterproof outer layer. Also, umbrellas can be used. In the field, there is also a possibility of some mosquitoes.
TOURS and GROUPS
There will be two groups. The morning program will be for:

 Group 2: Bioenergy location with new biocarbon factory, large-scale CHP production from wood, and foresight of hydrogen and biomethane production (Savon Voima Oy) |
Group 1: Sawmill plant tour and wood handling logistics with timber transported by timber trucks and railways in the mill area (Stora Enso Plc, Mantsinen Group)
In the afternoon, both groups will meet at the forest harvesting site for a demonstration of the newest CTL harvesting technologies and methods, including:
- Harvesting industrial roundwood and energy wood
- Paying attention to biodiversity in wood-harvesting operations
- Repelling root-rot disease (stump treatment) in summertime wood-harvesting operations in Finland.

For all the field trip participants:
The field trip will end back in Joensuu, at the Pielinen riverside, on the former sawmill area that has been rebuilt for citizens. The City of Joensuu introduces the monument honouring the old sawmill history. Also, some latest forest technologies will be presented, with the possibility of witnessing timber floating.
